A Day at Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, SC
On Thursday, May 23, 2019, I took a ride north on Hwy. 17 in South Carolina to visit a botanical garden that I had heard was worth the trip. The trip took about 90 minutes through some relatively serene beach communities of McClellanville and Polly's Island ( not so serene). My purpose was to take photos of the Gardens similar to other gardens I had visited in the Bronx, NY; Vancouver, BC; Glenveigh National Park in County Donegal, Ireland, Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Madison, WI and a number of other gardens on my travels in recent years. Brookgreen Gardens is more than just a wide variety of flowers. It includes hikes in the marshlands of the low country, a river cruise, multiple sculptures located throughout the gardens and housed in special pavilions, a butterfly garden, a small zoo of local animals found in the low country, and many places to sit and meditate. I hesitate to compare botanical gardens, but it reminded me very much of the gardens in Madison, WI that try to visit on my visits to my the city where I was born and raised.
This presentation is meant to be a series of several portfolios giving a flavor to my visit with particular emphasis on the various plants and flowers with a sample of sculpture and few photos of the fauna that can be found in the gardens. I may label some of the photos for clarity, but there will be a paucity of text from this point on. I will use the slideshow format, so please click your way through the photos or let the program move at its own pace. You can always pause the program. I am not a botanist and will not be naming the flowers. My hope is that you will enjoy the colors and find some peace and quiet in the experience.

A Foggy Day on Isle of Palms
I have taken many photos at the. beach on Isle of Palms, SC. It is only 10 minutes from my house and an easy jaunt by car early in the morning or later in the day. On this particular early morn, it was overcast and foggy. The chance of a beautiful sunrise, one of many that I have captured, was out of the question. However, the foggy atmosphere encompassing the beach provided some interesting and eerie shots. There is not much color to be found in these photos and several are rendered in black and white. I will let the photos speak for themselves as they attempt to convey the beauty of this early morning foggy day.
