Wisconsin Trip, 2016:
Fully Posted: Scroll Away!
I am posting an 11,000 word journal that I kept during the trip. In addition, I have added selected photos that complement the text in the journal. This is a pdf file of my original journal that appears to have converted nicely to the site. Although, the journal is lengthy, it will provide a context for the thematic photos that follow. I urge you to give it a look.
Note: The pdf file below scrolls well on computers, but may not be so easy to scroll on phones and note pads.

Photo Portfolios: Themes from a Wisconsin Trip
The photo portfolios are organized around Themes: I. Quiet Places in Madison, II. Cityscapes, III. Rivers and Countrysides, IV. Encounters. Although the themes are not arranged in chronological order of the trip, you can refer back to the Journal for the stories that surround many of these photos. I do attempt to follow some chronological order in arranging the photos on the slide shows.
I. Quiet Places in Madison
The series of portfolios below depict wonderful places to walk and think in Madison, Wisconsin. I have covered these areas in earlier trips, but have attempted give a fresh look at these places in the early spring of the year.
University of Wisconsin Arboretum
I visited the University of Wisconsin Arboretum on the first morning of my first full day in Madison. I love walking there in any season. In the early spring, you witness the first stages of rebirth of the flora and fauna that populate this special place nestled into preserved spaces bordered by residential areas.

Vilas Park
This park is where the Madison Zoo is located. Situated on the northern shore of Lake Wingra that boundaries the Arboretum, this park has been the training ground for many of the Olympic Speed Skaters that have originated in Madison over the years. I have taken photos of the Vilas bridges many times, but they continue to catch the interest of my camera. It is a glorious place to walk on an early spring morning.

Olbrich Park Botanical Gardens
I wanted to see the Gardens in early spring to see how they would begin to show the brilliant colors of summer and fall. I visited on a day in the middle of my first week, and again about a week later. Some warm weather and needed rain intervened and began to make quite a difference.

II. Cityscapes
Most of the photos below were taken in Madison, Wisconsin. However, I did stop in South Bend, IN on the way out and State College, PA on the way back to take a look at two college campuses in addition to the photos you will see of the University of Wisconsin Campus. I took some of these photos on bike rides, but other times, I drove to Monona Terrace and parked in the ramp.

III. Rivers and Countrysides
Using both bike and auto, I took several trips beyond the borders of Madison to explore the beauty left by the glaciers centuries ago in south central Wisconsin. The photos below give definition to those excursions.
Rivers
The photos below were taken on the Wisconsin River near Spring Green and Sauk City, WI the Bark River, in southeastern, WI near Ft. Atkinson, and the Little Sugar River along the Sugar River Bike Trail near New Glarus, WI. The Little Sugar River flows into the Sugar River near Albany, WI. The Wisconsin hits the Mississippi River in Prairie du Chien, WI. The Bark and the larger Sugar River flow into the Rock River, which continues on to the Mississippi entering near Moline. The waters of the three rivers and a creek in this portfolio finish their journeys in the Gulf of Mexico.

Countrysides
One of my frequent recreations while living in Wisconsin and after I earned my driver's license was to get into the car and just drive through the beauty of the southern Wisconsin countryside. I am still doing that today at the age of 73 whenever I spend a little time in Madison. Both car and bike provide the photo opportunities.

IV. Friendly Encounters
The full story of my various encounters in this trip are detailed in the Journal. I am repeating the photos, here for a fuller view of the terrific friends and new people that I met on journey to and from Wisconsin. I have referenced the page in the Journal for the mini story behind each photo.
